Don’t just study climate change
HELP FORESTS THRIVE
Dr. Rafaella Mayrinck always knew she wanted to protect nature. Growing up surrounded by Brazil’s rainforests, she felt a deep connection to the land—but had no clear roadmap to make a difference.
Dr. Rafaella Mayrinck:
Protecting forests for future generations
Mayrinck has always felt at home in the forest, whether in her native Brazil or her new home in New Brunswick. Together with her students, she's tackling climate change by studying the genetics of tree species to help forests thrive amidst ongoing changes.
01
Immersive learning
Mayrinck studied forestry in Brazil, including Amazon rainforest coursework and survival skills, learning solutions-based approaches to conserve forests.
TransX research lead
The next step in her journey was leading UNB’s TransX initiative, where she studied tree responses to warming, leaf and growth phenology, health, and survival to mitigate climate change impacts.
02
03
Assisted migration focus
Mayrinck now researches which tree species and genetic materials perform best in varying environments to inform future forest management strategies.
